Step-by-Step: Launch Your Shopify Store

From zero to your first sale. Every step in the right order — no guesswork.

Start your free trial
Go to shopify.com and click “Start free trial.” Enter your email — you don’t need a credit card for the first 3 days. Shopify then offers $1/month for the first 3 months on select plans. Use your business email (not a personal one). Choose a store name — it becomes your storename.myshopify.com URL (this can’t be changed, but you’ll add a custom domain later).

✅ Your myshopify.com URL is permanent — pick a name close to your brand even if it’s not perfect. You’ll mask it with a custom domain anyway.

Choose and customize your theme
In Shopify Admin: go to Online Store → Themes. Browse free themes — Dawn, Sense, Craft, and Refresh are all excellent and conversion-optimized. Paid themes ($100–$500) offer more customization but most businesses don’t need them initially. Click “Customize” to use the drag-and-drop theme editor. Adjust colors, fonts, header, footer, homepage layout, and sections without touching any code.

Add your products
Go to Products → Add product. For every product include:
Title: Clear, keyword-rich, not too long
Description: Benefit-focused, formatted with headers and bullets. Use Shopify Magic (AI) to auto-draft.
Images: Minimum 1200×1200px, pure white background for hero, lifestyle photos, 5+ images per product
Price: Compare at price for “sale” display
Variants: Size, color, material — all added here
Inventory: Enable “Track quantity”
SEO Preview: Fill in meta title and description at the bottom of each product page.

Set up your domain
Go to Online Store → Domains. Option A: Buy a domain through Shopify ($14/year for .com — automatic SSL and DNS setup). Option B: Connect an existing domain from GoDaddy, Namecheap, Google Domains (free connection — just update DNS records). Custom domain makes your store look professional and trustworthy. Customers seeing “storename.myshopify.com” lose confidence — always connect a custom domain before launching.

Set up payments
Go to Settings → Payments. Enable Shopify Payments if available in your country — this eliminates transaction fees and activates Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and BNPL automatically. You’ll need to verify your identity and add your bank account for payouts. If Shopify Payments isn’t available in your country, add a third-party provider (Stripe, PayPal, or your local gateway). Also add PayPal Express — it’s free and many customers prefer it.
⚠️ Non-Shopify Payments users: You’ll pay a transaction fee (0.6–2%) on EVERY sale in addition to the payment gateway’s own fees. Factor this into your pricing from day one.

Configure shipping
Go to Settings → Shipping and Delivery. Set up shipping zones (countries/regions you ship to) and rates. Options:
Free shipping: Most effective for conversion (build cost into product price)
Flat rate: Simple and predictable — e.g., $5.99 standard
Calculated rates: Real-time carrier rates (requires Advanced plan or add-on)
Local delivery/pickup: For local businesses
Install Shopify Shipping to print discounted labels from USPS, UPS, DHL directly in your admin.

Set up tax collection
Go to Settings → Taxes and duties. Shopify can automatically calculate and collect sales tax based on your location and customer location. In the US, enable “Collect US sales tax” and select your nexus states. EU sellers: enable VAT with your VAT number and use the One-Stop-Shop (OSS) scheme for EU-wide selling. For non-US/EU: consult a local accountant to understand your obligations. Shopify does not file taxes for you — it only collects.

Test everything, then remove password protection
