01 — Overview

What is eBay?

Founded in 1995, eBay is one of the world’s largest online marketplaces connecting buyers and sellers across 190+ countries. It’s unique in offering both auction-style and fixed-price selling.

🔨
Auction & Fixed Price
eBay invented online auctions. Sell via auction (starting bids, time limits) or “Buy It Now” fixed price. Auctions can drive prices above market value for rare or desirable items. Fixed price offers predictability.
🌍
Global Marketplace
132 million active buyers in 190+ countries. List once and your item is visible globally (with international shipping options). eBay’s Global Shipping Program handles customs and international logistics automatically.
♻️
New & Used Items
Unlike Amazon, eBay thrives on used, vintage, and refurbished items. Perfect for selling pre-owned electronics, collectibles, antiques, fashion, car parts, and one-of-a-kind items that have no place on other platforms.
🏷️
No Monthly Fee to Start
Zero monthly fees to list and sell on eBay (up to 250 free listings/month). You only pay when an item sells. eBay Store subscriptions are optional and add benefits like more free listings and lower final value fees.
🛡️
eBay Money Back Guarantee
Buyer protection built into every transaction. Items must match description or buyers can return for a full refund. Sellers must comply — this is eBay’s non-negotiable trust foundation.
📊
Seller Analytics
Seller Hub provides detailed analytics: sales performance, traffic, conversion rates, best-selling categories, buyer demographics, and competitor research via Terapeak — a powerful free research tool for eBay sellers.
💡
eBay vs Amazon vs Shopify — Key Difference
eBay is ideal for used, unique, or rare items and sellers who want to start immediately with no upfront costs. Amazon is better for new branded products at scale. Shopify is best when you want your own brand and customer list. Many successful sellers use all three as complementary channels — eBay for clearance/used, Amazon for new products, Shopify as a brand home base.
02 — Accounts

Account Types

eBay offers individual and business account types. Choosing the right one affects your selling limits, fees, and legal responsibilities.

👤
Individual Account
For casual sellers and those just starting out. Ideal for clearing unwanted items or part-time selling.
250 free listings per month
No monthly subscription fee
Sell in all categories
Auction and fixed price listings
Limited selling volume until track record established
Higher final value fees vs Store subscribers
No eBay Store storefront
Recommended for Serious Sellers
🏢
Business Account
For registered businesses, high-volume sellers, or anyone selling as a primary income source. Required in many EU countries if selling commercially.
Business name displayed on listings
Higher selling limits from the start
Access to bulk listing tools
VAT invoicing for B2B sales (EU)
Required for eBay Store subscriptions in some regions
Access to Seller Hub advanced analytics
⚠️
EU/UK Sellers: Business Registration May Be Required
If you sell regularly on eBay in the EU or UK as a source of income, you are legally required to register as a business seller. The EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) and UK DAC7 rules require eBay to collect and report trader information. Selling commercially as an “individual” to avoid business obligations is non-compliant and can result in account suspension plus tax authority investigation.
03 — Fees

eBay Fees Decoded

eBay has a multi-layered fee structure. Understanding every cost is essential to pricing profitably and avoiding surprises.

Insertion Fee
$0
250 free listings/month for all sellers. $0.35 per listing after free allowance. Store subscribers get thousands of free listings.
Final Value Fee
3–15%
Charged on total sale price including shipping. Rate varies by category. Most categories: 12.9% + $0.30 per order. Calculated goods: 3%.
Promoted Listings
2–20%
Optional advertising. Pay only when item sells via promoted link. You set the ad rate — higher rates = more visibility. Standard vs Advanced options.
International Fee
1.65%
Added when buyer is in a different country than seller. Applies on top of final value fee. Consider when pricing for international buyers.
PayPal / Managed Payments
Included
eBay Managed Payments handles processing. No separate PayPal fee. Processing cost built into final value fee. Payouts 1–3 business days.
Optional Listing Upgrades
$0.10–4
Bold listing ($2), Gallery Plus ($0.35), subtitle ($1.50), Reserve price (auction) ($5 or 7.5%), scheduling fee ($0.10). Most unnecessary.
Store Subscription
$4.95–350
/month. Optional. Starter $4.95, Basic $21.95, Premium $59.95, Anchor $299.95, Enterprise $2,999.95/mo. Each tier adds free listings and lower FVF.
Dispute / Chargeback Fee
$20
Per dispute lost through eBay’s Money Back Guarantee. Waived if seller wins. Seller-initiated cancellations count against your defect rate.

06 — Global Reach

eBay by Country

eBay operates dedicated marketplaces in many countries plus ships to 190+ globally. Where you’re located and where you sell affects fees, payment methods, and legal requirements.

🌍
How eBay’s International Structure Works
eBay has dedicated country marketplaces (e.g. ebay.co.uk, ebay.de) each with their own payment systems, regulations, and buyer bases. You can list on your home marketplace and use International Selling to reach buyers worldwide, OR register on multiple eBay sites. The Global Shipping Program (GSP) lets you ship to a US warehouse and eBay handles all international forwarding, customs, and logistics.

09 — Getting Started

How to Start Selling on eBay

From zero to your first sale in the fastest way possible. Every step in the right order.

01
Create your eBay account
Go to ebay.com (or your local eBay marketplace) and click “Register.” Choose Individual or Business account. Use your business email if selling commercially. Your username becomes part of your seller identity — choose something professional and related to what you sell. You can change it once per 30 days.
Create eBay Account →
✅ If selling commercially (as a business), register as a Business account from the start. Switching later is possible but adds friction. EU/UK regulations require business registration for commercial sellers.
02
Set up eBay Managed Payments
eBay Managed Payments is mandatory for all sellers. Go to My eBay → Account → Payments. You’ll need to provide: government-issued ID (passport, driving license), bank account details for payouts, SSN/TIN (US sellers) or equivalent for tax reporting. Verification takes 1–3 business days. Payouts arrive in your bank account 1–3 days after sale. Payoneer is available as an alternative payout method in most countries.
✅ Payoneer is the recommended solution for sellers in countries without direct bank payout support (Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, etc.). Sign up for Payoneer first, then link it to your eBay account.
03
Understand your initial selling limits
New accounts start with low selling limits — typically 10 items or $500/month. This is normal and protects the marketplace from fraud. Your limits increase automatically as you: complete successful transactions, maintain good feedback, upload tracking, and ship on time. You can also request a limit increase from eBay once you’ve completed at least a few sales. Go to Seller Hub → Overview → Monthly selling limits.
⚠️ Don’t buy feedback or use manipulation services to artificially boost your score — this violates eBay policy and risks permanent suspension. Build feedback organically through real sales.
04
Research your items with Terapeak
Before listing, research what similar items actually sell for. Use Terapeak Product Research (free for Basic Store subscribers and above, limited access for others) — it shows sold listings, average prices, sell-through rates, and top-performing listings. Also use the “Sold listings” filter on eBay search (check “Sold Items” in the left panel) to see what buyers actually paid, not just what sellers are asking.
Open Terapeak →
✅ The “sold price” is what matters — not the asking price. Search your item, filter by Sold listings, and price competitively. An item priced $5 below similar listings sells much faster than one priced the same.
05
Create your first listing
Click “Sell” in the top navigation. Enter item name or UPC/ISBN for auto-fill if available. Complete every field: condition, description, specifics (size, color, brand — these affect search), photos (minimum 1, maximum 24), price, quantity, shipping options, and return policy. Enable “Item Specifics” fully — eBay penalizes listings missing them in search ranking. Select the most accurate condition: New, New Other, Open Box, Refurbished, Used (Good/Very Good), For Parts.
06
Set up shipping correctly
Options: Free shipping (builds cost into price — improves search ranking), Flat rate (simple, predictable), or Calculated shipping (real-time carrier rates based on buyer’s location and item weight/dimensions). For domestic US: USPS, UPS, FedEx, and eBay Standard Envelope (for trading cards, coins, stamps — $0.63). For international: eBay’s Global Shipping Program (ship once to eBay’s Kentucky warehouse — they handle customs). Always get a postal scale and measure dimensions accurately — incorrect weights cause overpayment or underpayment.
✅ Free shipping listings appear higher in eBay search results and converts better because buyers see the final price immediately. Build 80–90% of your shipping cost into the item price.
07
Configure your return policy
eBay heavily favors sellers who offer returns. Options: No returns, 30-day returns (buyer pays), 30-day returns (seller pays), 60-day returns. Offering 30-day free returns (seller pays) gives you Top Rated Plus status which provides a 10% final value fee discount on qualifying listings — often more than paying for the occasional return. For high-value items: clearly state condition, provide photos of any flaws, reduces return requests.
⚠️ Even if you set “No Returns,” eBay’s Money Back Guarantee still applies. If an item isn’t as described, buyers can still open a case and eBay will typically side with the buyer. The return policy only affects change-of-mind returns.
08
Add Promoted Listings
Once listed, consider adding Promoted Listings Standard (you pay the ad rate only when an item sells via your promoted placement). Competitive ad rate in your category: use eBay’s suggested ad rate or start at 2–3% above it. Promoted Listings give your items priority placement in search results. For new sellers with limited feedback, this can help compensate for lower organic search ranking. Start with a 5–8% ad rate for most categories and optimize from there.
Promoted Listings Dashboard →
09
Ship fast and communicate
Once sold: ship within your stated handling time (same day or next day preferred). Upload tracking immediately after shipping — this is critical for your performance metrics. Message the buyer with the tracking number. Pack securely — damaged items = returns + negative feedback. For high-value items: add signature confirmation, insurance, and photograph the packed item before shipping as evidence of condition.
✅ Upload tracking as soon as you drop the package off — even before the carrier scans it. eBay measures “tracking upload rate” separately from “on-time delivery rate.” Uploading tracking on time protects both metrics.
10
Request feedback and grow
After delivery, wait 2–3 days then send a polite message thanking the buyer and asking if everything was satisfactory. Do NOT ask directly for positive feedback — this violates eBay policy. Instead, invite them to contact you if there are any issues. Happy buyers usually leave positive feedback without prompting. Leave feedback for buyers too — many sellers only leave feedback after receiving it, which creates a feedback exchange dynamic. Aim for 100% positive feedback rate.
⚠️ Respond to all buyer messages within 24 hours. Slow responses lead to cases opened, which damage your metrics. Set up eBay mobile app notifications so you never miss a message.
10 — Listing Strategy

Listing Optimisation

How eBay’s Cassini search algorithm ranks listings — and exactly how to rank at the top.

📝
Title Optimisation (80 chars)
Your title is the most important ranking factor. Use all 80 characters. Include: Brand + Model + Key Specs + Condition + Size/Colour. Use words buyers actually search. Avoid: “WOW!”, “L@@K”, “Rare!!!” — these waste space and trigger spam filters. Study top-ranked competitors’ titles for the same item and use similar keyword patterns.
📸
Photos — Up to 24 Images
Use all 24 photo slots if possible. Photo requirements: 500px minimum (1600px recommended), white or neutral background for main photo, show every angle, all features, any defects (buyers trust this and return less), close-ups, scale reference, and original packaging if included. Use natural light or lightbox. eBay provides free photo editing via its mobile app — use it.
⚙️
Item Specifics (Fill Everything)
eBay’s algorithm penalizes listings with incomplete Item Specifics. Fill in every available field: Brand, MPN, Color, Size, Material, Style, etc. Buyers use these as filters — if yours are blank, you won’t appear in filtered searches. eBay added mandatory Item Specifics for most categories in 2021. Incomplete listings are demoted or rejected entirely.
🔍
eBay’s Cassini Search Algorithm
Cassini ranks listings based on: relevance (title/specifics match), seller performance score, pricing competitiveness, listing completeness, click-through rate, conversion rate, and shipping speed. New listings get a short “boost” window — use it by pricing aggressively in the first 24–48 hours to generate initial sales and clicks that then boost your organic ranking.
🏷️
Pricing Strategy
Use Best Offer on fixed-price listings — it attracts bargain hunters who would otherwise scroll past. Set an auto-accept threshold (e.g., auto-accept at 90% of asking price) and auto-decline (e.g., decline anything below 70%). Markdown sales (through eBay’s Markdown Manager, available on Basic Store+) create urgency and appear in eBay sale search filters. Price just below psychological thresholds ($29.99 not $30).
🔄
Relist and Refresh Strategies
Listings that don’t sell in 30 days get stale. Use “Sell Similar” (not “Relist”) to create a fresh listing rather than extending an old one — fresh listings get a visibility boost. Lower the price incrementally on items that aren’t moving. Enable “Out-of-Stock” (available to Store subscribers) to keep listings active even at zero inventory so you don’t lose sales history and ranking.
11 — Expert Strategy

Pro Seller Tips

What separates the top 1% of eBay sellers from everyone else. Hard-earned strategies that move the needle.

📦
Source from the Right Places
Best sourcing channels for eBay: (1) Retail arbitrage — clearance aisles at Walmart, Target, HomeGoods; (2) Thrift stores and charity shops — clothes, books, games; (3) Estate sales and auctions — antiques, collectibles; (4) Liquidation pallets — returns from Amazon/Walmart at deep discounts; (5) Manufacturer overstock; (6) Local Facebook Marketplace/Craigslist to flip items at higher prices on eBay.
🎯
Specialise in a Niche
The most profitable eBay sellers specialize. When you know a niche deeply — vintage cameras, car parts for a specific model, a certain era of fashion — you can spot underpriced items instantly, write better listings, understand buyer questions, and price more accurately. Generalists struggle. Niche specialists consistently outperform. Start with what you already know and buy locally.
⏱️
Auction Timing Matters
If using auctions: list to end Sunday evening 6–10pm (your target market’s timezone). That’s when bidding activity is highest. 7-day auctions that start on Sunday nights end the following Sunday — maximum exposure and competitive last-minute bidding. For rare collectibles, start at $0.99 with no reserve — it attracts maximum early bidders and creates a bidding war. For common items, fixed price usually outperforms auctions.

Use Terapeak Aggressively
Terapeak (included free with Basic eBay Store) shows you sold price data, sell-through rates, average listing price vs sold price, and seasonal trends. Before adding any new product line: check the 90-day sell-through rate (how many listed actually sold). Aim for 60%+ sell-through in your category. Low sell-through means oversaturated market — find a niche angle or avoid it entirely.
🛡️
Handle Disputes Like a Pro
When a buyer opens a case: respond within 3 business days, always. For “Item Not Received” with tracking showing delivered: provide tracking info in eBay’s case system — eBay will usually close in your favor. For “Item Not as Described”: if it’s a legitimate complaint, accept the return gracefully. Fighting valid returns is worse than accepting them — it costs your defect rate. Reserve disputes for clear fraud: no tracking delivery claim, repeated returns from same buyer.
🌍
Global Shipping Program = Easy International Sales
Enable eBay’s Global Shipping Program (GSP) to sell internationally with zero additional effort. You ship domestically to eBay’s shipping centre; they handle international forwarding, customs paperwork, import duties (buyer-paid), and any delivery issues internationally. You’re not responsible for items after they reach the centre. Unlocks 132M+ buyers globally from your first listing. Available for most US and UK sellers.
📱
Mobile App for Quick Listings
eBay’s mobile app can identify items via photo and auto-fill listings. Photograph the barcode or item — eBay matches it and pre-fills title, category, item specifics, and suggested price. Drastically speeds up listing when sourcing on the go. Also enables instant notification management and same-day shipping confirmations which protect your performance metrics.
💰
Calculate Your True Profit
True profit formula: Sale Price − (eBay FVF + Promoted Listing %) − Shipping Cost − Packaging Cost − Item Cost − (any applicable VAT/GST/income tax). Use eBay’s fee calculator before listing. For most categories: assume 15–18% total eBay cost (FVF + promoted + payment processing). If margins below 20% after all costs, reconsider sourcing price. Many new sellers underestimate packaging and shipping costs — weigh and measure everything.
🔔
Watch for Category Opportunities
Set up eBay “Saved Searches” with keyword + price threshold for underpriced items in your niche. When a great deal posts, you’re notified instantly. Also watch completed auctions in your niche — identify items that went unsold (bidding didn’t meet reserve) then reach out to sellers or buy relisted items. Seasonal arbitrage: buy Christmas decorations in January, summer gear in September at clearance prices, sell 6–9 months later at peak demand.
